Frequently Asked Questions
-
Obstetrics and Gynaecology (O&G) is a medical speciality that is focused on providing expert care for women’s health.
Some doctors who specialise in O&G will practice in both fields, whilst others only work in Obstetrics or Gynaecology.
A gynaecologist is a specialist doctor who diagnoses and treats conditions that affect the female reproductive system. This includes issues relating to the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, vagina, vulva and urinary system.
An obstetrician is a specialist doctor who focuses on pregnancy, childbirth and postnatal care. This includes supporting uncomplicated and complex pregnacies and labours, and assistance during delivery or caesarean births.
-
Dr Kath is a subspecialist, which is a specialist O&G who holds the FRANZCOG qualification, is a Fellow of the College and has undertaken further training to become certified in one of the following five subspecialty areas:
Reproductive Endocrinology and Fertility (CREI)
Gynaecological Oncology (CGO)
Maternal Fetal Medicine (CMFM)
Obstetrical and Gynaecological Ultrasound (COGU)
Urogynaecology (CU).
Dr Kath is one of the elite fertility specialists in Australia holding the prestigious Certified Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (CREI) qualification.
-
CREI accreditation, awarded by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG), represents the pinnacle of training, experience, and expertise in fertility care. With fewer than 100 CREI subspecialists in Australia and New Zealand having achieved this distinction, Dr Kath is among her field's most highly trained professionals.
-
To achieve CREI certification, specialists must complete at least 15 years of rigorous medical practice and patient care training. This includes:
6 year training program in Obstetrics and Gynaecology
A dedicated 3 year CREI fellowship focusing exclusively on the full spectrum of male and female reproductive health issues, including surgery, laboratory skill development and research
Passing comprehensive written and oral examinations to demonstrate mastery of complex reproductive conditions
CREI subspecialists, like Dr Kath, commit to life-long learning to maintain certification and stay at the forefront of advancements in fertility care. This ensures their knowledge, skills, and resources remain cutting-edge.
